I finished University!

Wow, that is so weird to say. Well ladies, I did it and I couldn't be happier!! Finally all my hard work and determination has paid off!! :) My last exam went surprisingly well which was just the cherry on top! Now that I am done, I have lots of time to think about packing and finishing up all of the last minute errands before leaving.

So yesterday, my boyfriend and I had a long talk and we decided that if I could find something, it would be a great experience for me to teach English in Mexico. So while on my break from studying, I looked around on some forums and saw a site that was about teaching English in Mexico.. If anyone has some first hand experience, I would love for you to share your story with me. I would even like to see if I was able to get a teaching position at a private school, but I only have a degree, would that be enough? I guess it's time to start researching!!!

  1. CONGRATULATIONS!!! That's wonderful! What did you receive your degree in?

I've taught English here for 13 years. I taught Kindergarten through 6th grade for 11 years and the past 2 years I've worked with adults. Working with children was quite a challenge. I loved the vacation time though. I've found that adults has been a lot easier for me and the pay is also better.

I have no formal training to be a teacher. My degree is in Communications.

If you plan to work legally, you'll need to deal with immigration. They'll ask for a lot of things, but on the list, they'll want an "apostille" on your college degree and birth certificate. If you can get this done while in Canada, it'll make your life easier.

  2. Thanks Jackie! It still feels unreal to be done, I now have degree in Psychology :)

Wow 13 years. That is fantastic! Was it hard for you when you first got started? I would love to work with adults, and can see why it would make the job a lot easier, but for now anything would be just fine with me :)

If I do find a job, I do plan to work legally. The only problem is I don't know when I can get an actual copy of my diploma since we are leaving so soon, do you think a copy of my transcript would do? I am going to try and get my birth certificate done over the weekend..

Thanks so much for all your info!

  4. Wow congrats. Wish I had some advice to give you about teaching, only thing I have heard is it is easier to come with all your paperwork prepared, getting anything done here is like watching paint dry. If it is supposed to take a week it will turn into three.

  5. Jennifer, Thank you! It still feels unreal. I am not doing anything big, just a dinner with the family :) Maybe a date night with L :D

Lisa, Thank you! Now that I have been reading up on it and Jackie has told me about her experience I am going to see what I can do. Convocation isn't until next October, so now I am really getting worried. I think what I am going to do is present an unofficial transcript because it will say that I am finished my studies and see how that goes.

  6. Congratulations!!!

I looked into teaching English previously but in Japan...and most of the opportunities all required you to have a university degree of any kind... So it sounds like that definitely could be an option for you! There might be opportunity for tutoring and separate lessons as well, you could advertise in the local classifieds or on craigslist once you get here just for extra money on the side :)

  7. Thank You!! :) Haha, funny that you mentioned Japan.. I have looked in the past at South Korea and was seriously interested in it, but for now, Mexico it is :D

Almost everyone I know or have met in Cancun speaks English, and pretty good English at that.. Also there are tons of private schools and English only schools, so I am keeping my fingers crossed!! I am going to check out craigslist and the local classifieds once I get there too since a little money on the side never hurts! :)

Do you work in Mexico Shelly?

  8. Sounds like a great idea! I do work here, but I'm lucky because my sister has an online business so I work for her and am still paid in Canadian wages to my Canadian account. :)
