What books to bring

So I decided to take the rest of the night off from studying on concentrate some more on packing some more stuff. So here I am, looking over my lists of things to pack and I look over at my book list.. I have decided to bring some of my book collection.. Before you say it, I know books are heavy, I know I should invest in a kindle, but I just can't seem to do it.. I tried out my cousin's for a few days and it just wasn't the same. Wierd? Probably, but it's just how I feel.. maybe because her's was one of the first one's that came out.. I dunno. Anyways back to the post. So I really don't know what to do about my books! Books in English in Mexico are hard to come by.. Last time I went for a few months I brought 3 books and its was a big mistake, my boyfriend and I went on a hunt for two days to look for some more for me and they were no where to be found, and when they were the selection was not very good, and really overpriced! So this is what I am thinking..bring five of my all time favourites, and then buy five new ones.. or just get over it and invest in a Kindle that way I can have all the books I want and don't have to worry about space and weight and anything else.. what do you guys think?!

Also, I need some recommendations for some new books! I love Emily Giffin, Sophia Kinsella.. so I guess chick-lit.. Hey don't judge me, it's my guilty pleasure! When I read, I like to read something light and upbeat, unless the book is really good and highly recomended then I will read it no matter what genre.

Any suggestions?!

Milena

  1. I would for sure recommend the kindle. I have the older version but I love it. I think it is only because I dont like the new touch screens and to me it is no big deal that my screen is not in color. That is what a computer is for. Anyways after traveling back and forth so much from here to the states I only have so much weight I am allowed on the plane and it got to the point were I had to include more important things in my suitcase.
I would recommend getting the kindle, you can have as many books as you want, always go back to them and all those books can fit right into your purse ;)

My favs are Susan wiggs, sherryl woods, and nora roberts. Good Luck!

  2. Well technically it wasn't a kindle it was a Sony version.. I think I am going to give the kindle a try!! It would be nice just to buy my books online and then save all that space/weight in my luggage! I am going to look those authors up! Any books in particular I should keep my eyes out for?

  3. Milena, it is for sure a great investment. With the 3g connection I am set up shop right from my kindle and it just charges my account, also if my computer was down for some reason I could get online to check email, another plus there are a lot of free books and games.

I enjoy all the books by these authors, right now I am going through the Fools Gold series by Susan Mallery. I like the books in series / collections.

  5. I so relate to this post. One of my biggest regrets is not bringing more books with me to El Salvador.
Thanks for checking out my blog btw, I am loving yours!

  6. I know, at times Mexico is verrrryyyyy slow and I have a hard time filling the gap since here I am use to working two jobs and university full-time and I noticed in the past how bored I would get, so I really regretted not bringing more books.. I am determined to not let this happen to me again, and I think I am going to take Lisa's advice and invest in a kindle :) Even in Cancun, which is very touristy, I found maybe 2-3 places that sell English books.. ranging from like 15-20 dollars each for book. The selection was so limited and most books/authors I had never heard of, lol.

I looked at the reviews for the kindle and they are all pretty positive, so maybe a kindle is for me after all!

Thanks as well for stopping by, I am stil trying to get the hang of blogging! So far I love it.

  7. Milena, as of now I have no end in site. We are just going to take it day by day and see what happens. No immediate plans for the future yet.

  8. Milena, I've been thinking about you since I found your blog through Lisa. I just wanted to share that I also made the move to Mexico shortly after graduating from college. I graduated in June 1991 and moved to Mexico in January 1992. Next month I'll be celebrating 20 years here!!! I moved to Puerto Vallarta first where I lived 12 years, 6 years in Mexico City and now I've been in Guadalajara for 2 years.

I've been married to a Mexican for almost 11 years. We have 2 daughters that were born in Vallarta.

I never thought I would be here so long. I guess you can say I thought I would be young forever. But I don't know if I could ever live in the States after so many years in Mexico.

Mexico has been good to me and has given me everything I could ask for.

I hope you also have a similar experience. :)

  9. Jackie, thank you so much for your reply. Mexico has also been good to me as well in many different ways..I have a love for the country that often is hard to put in words.

We don't plan to apply for immigration for another few months.. but we don't have any indefinite plans. We know that we are happy in Mexico, and it feels like home.

As much as I would love to live in Mexico long term, we worry about our future economically, which is why we want to pursue permanent residence for L here in Canada.

Often I feel at a cross roads because although I do love my country, I have never felt like it was for me. It's hard to explain it to someone that doesn't understand the feeling.. but I get the feeling that you will understand what I am saying.

This time around we are going in with no expectations, and see where that takes us.. we have a general outline, but you never know where life will take you!

  10. Lisa, that is more or less like us. Taking it day by day. We want to take some time there to really think about what is right for us long term, we have a general outline, but like I said earlier you just never know what road life will take you down..:)

  11. Looks like you've already decided on the kindle and I think that's a great choice! I wanted to buy one before I moved to Puerto Vallarta but put it off due to the cost.. I'm using my Iphone's reader now though and that does it for now :)

Definitely agree with Lisa in regards to saving space on your return trips. Each time I visit home I have to go out and buy another suitcase from the salvation army or elsewhere cuz i bring too much stuff back lol. Thank goodness for Westjet deals :D

Goodluck with the move :) Enjoy the last few weeks in Canada

  12. I loooovee Westjet. Throughout our whole relationship I have flown with west jet because you can always get the best deals and I find their customer service excellent!

I did decide on the kindle just because of the weight issue..I know realistically if I want to bring all of the books I own and/or want to read while were there we may have to leave behind my bf's clothes behind :P and since I can't do that, the Kindle it is!

Haha, I too always want to bring soo much stuff back just because I know there it will be so pricey, but between the two of us and a few family members who are going to be going down before us, I think we will make do :)

  13. There's an awesome used book store in Cancun. It's called Needful Things and on Coba. Unfortunately for me, they opened just a month after I moved back to the States, but they are great! You can bring your good quality books in for store credit. Also, expats hoard books and do a lot of exchanging so you will be just fine! No need to spend a crazy amount on the small selection at Sanborn's and Walmart!
